Sony to Launch AVCHD Camcorder Binoculars

Sony brings us another first, binoculars with integrated HD camcorder functionality and 3D recording to boot. Although the DEV-3 and DEV-5 may be niche products, they are packed with impressive Sony imaging technology in a familiar binocular form factor.

Image stabilization combines with full HD recording in 3D or standard 2D format along with the capability to shoot 7.1 megapixel stills. Of course binoculars are designed for observing the action from afar, and both models have 10x optical zoom. The DEV-5 steps things up a notch and includes digital zoom up to 20x.

The DEV-5 also includes built-in GPS for Sony's proprietary geotagging technology, a feature that the DEV-3 lacks. Both models record stereo sound and utilize Sony's Exmor R back-illuminated 1/4-inch CMOS sensors. Dual f2.8-f3.4 G-series lenses are capable of focusing on objects as close as 0.4 inches away.

Each eye has a 409k pixel viewfinder LCD and an accessory shoe makes it possible to add an external LCD monitor. Sony's NP-FV7 battery pack should provide up to 2.5 hours of standard HD video recording, with shorter 3D running times. AVCHD video can be recorded to SDXC memory cards or Memory Stick Pro Duo storage. Audio input, mini-HDMI out, and headphone jacks round out the package along with available accessories.

The Sony DEV-5 comes with some of these accessories, including a lens cover, eye cups, neck strap and carrying case. Look for the DEV-5 and DEV-3 to hit shelves in November at retail prices of $1999 and $1399 respectively.
