IKEA to Distribute Cardboard Digital Cameras

Furniture maker IKEA's latest creation is designed to help customers share photos of their living space. It's a cardboard digital camera, about as simple as it gets. A cutout serves as the viewfinder, while two AA batteries power the device.

A flip-out USB connector is used to transfer the photos stored on the camera to a computer. Operation is simple, press the black button on the front of the camera to turn the device on. A green light comes on next to the viewfinder when the camera is ready.

Canon 1D X Finally Available for Pre-Order

Retailers are finally accepting pre-orders for the Canon EOS-1D X digital SLR camera. If you're interested in ordering the 1D X you should act quickly. The 10th generation EOS-1 is being released in limited quantities, and pre-orders will be filled in the order they are received. Online retailers may also close pre-ordering due to high demand.

The Canon 1D X was originally believed to be set for a late March release but no official date was ever confirmed. Though the rumor mill swirled with speculation about delays do to manufacturing issues and/or issues with the firmware for the 1D X, no verifiable information ever surfaced. Whatever the reality , the 1DX is now slated for a late April release.

Eastman Kodak to Exit Camera Market

The name synonymous with photography itself is not itself lately. Hot on the heels of its bankruptcy filing, Kodak has announced it will stop making digital cameras altogether. After 131 years in business the company plans to license its brand to other manufacturers and focus on digital printing.

Sony continues to push the boundaries of compact digital cameras with its latest T series offering, the DSC-TX200V. This camera features a reinforced glass design that's not only attractive but waterproof to 16 feet as well. The TX200V sports a WVGA 3.3-inch TruBlack OLED touch-screen that fills the entire back with 921k dots.

The compact unit weighs in at 4.6 ounces and measures just 3.8" × 2.4" × 0.7" despite built-in GPS and an 18 megapixel backlit CMOS image sensor. This new Exmor R sensor is coupled with a BIONZ image processor and boasts the highest resolution of any comparably-sized compact digital camera on the market today.

Fujifilm X-Pro1 Pre-Ordering Starts in Japan

Japanese consumers can now pre-order the Fujifilm X-Pro1 from Amazon. According to the product page, the latest mirrorless offering from Fujifilm is scheduled for release in Japan on February 18. Pricing for the body alone is set at 135,000 Japanese yen, equivalent to roughly $1760.

As Photo Rumors points out, pricing in the US is likely to be less. When the Fujifilm X10 launched in Japan it was priced at the equivalent of over $730. US market pricing was set significantly lower at $599.

Olympus OM-D to Launch on February 8th

Olympus is planning a mirrorless digital update for its OM line of cameras, the last of which was named the OM-2000. The successor is said to be the OM-D and will be announced by Olympus on Wednesday, February 8th according to a report by 4/3 Rumors.

The latest in a long line of OM classics, including the OM-1, OM-4 and OM-10 among others will be a mirrorless Micro Four Thirds camera with the same impeccable retro styling. The difference is that the OM-D will be packed with the latest digital technology inside the chassis.

Mirrorless Fujifilm X-Pro1 Set to Impress

Fujifilm's latest entry into the digital camera market comes with the same sharp, retro styling seen in the Fujifilm X10 and X100 models. The X-Pro1 is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera (MILC) that will launch along with three specially designed lenses in February.

Even though the X-Pro1 may look like a rangefinder from decades ago, Fujifilm has packed advanced technology into this camera including the X Mount lens mount, which communicates information between the body and lens. Framing lines are adjusted automatically when switching to a different lens, and a hybrid viewfinder makes it easy to switch between optical and electronic settings at will.

Samsung Adds Wi-Fi Digital Cameras to Lineup

Taking photos with a compact digital camera is great, until it's time to transfer photos off of the camera to a computer. Then the process of sharing photos can begin. Samsung looks to circumvent the intermediate steps and make photo syncing and sharing effortless with three new Wi-Fi enabled cameras.

The Samsung WB850F leads the pack, with a 16 megapixel CMOS image sensor behind a 21X zoom Schneider lens (that's a whopping 23mm to 483mm equivalent). Besides built-in Wi-Fi, the WB850F sports GPS for geotagging and a 3 inch AMOLED rear screen. Stills can be captured simultaneously while recording 1080p HD video.

Panasonic Unveils S-Series Lumix Cameras

Panasonic's Lumix line of compact digital cameras just expanded thanks to new offerings revealed at CES. The DMC-SZ1 and the DMC-SZ7 both offer feature-packed yet incredibly slim form factors, clocking 0.9-inch deep profiles. One could argue these cameras fall in the megazoom category, with a 10X optical zoom lens capable of 25mm to 250mm equivalent range.

Although both cameras share the same Leica DC Vario-Elmar lens, internal specs diverge from there. The SZ1 features a 16 megapixel CCD image sensor, along with 720p HD video recording at 30 frames per second and a maximum ISO sensitivity of 1600.

Sharing your self-portraits just got easier thanks to the new Samsung DualView DV300F. This update to the ST700 adds built-in Wi-Fi to the line of dual-display compact digital cameras.
