Canon Mirrorless Camera Rumors Resurface

Despite Canon executives stating that the company doesn't need to compete in the mirrorless camera market, rumors surrounding Canon's entry into the segment refuse to go away. Mirrorless digital cameras, also known as CSCs (Compact Camera Systems) have become increasingly popular with consumers. Olympus, Panasonic, Pentax and Sony have all entered the market with their own mirrorless interchangeable lens digital cameras. Maeda's comments are vague, but nevertheless have kept Canon fans hopeful for a mirrorless offering in 2012.

Canon: Competing in Mirrorless Market Isn't Required

In an interview with Amateur Photographer magazine, Canon head of consumer imaging in Europe, Rainer Fuehres, indicated that competing in the growing CSC (Compact Camera System) market isn't a requirement for Canon. Fuehres went on to explain that manufacturers that have entered the CSC market thus far have done so due to a lack of success in the DSLR market, which Canon dominates along with Nikon. Fuehres expressed his hopes that if Canon ever decided to enter the mirrorless marketplace, that it would do so because it had found a way to innovate, not to simply issue a "me too" product.
